I previously mentioned my issues with the thief class, and presented a different way of handling thief skills with the Rogue for Swords & Wizardry Whitebox. After reading through some of the suggested names from Roger Burgess, I tweaked it a bit and came up with the Knave, a thief variant for Labyrinth Lord. Click on the preview image for the full PDF:
Doug, I played a full session with your thief variant for White Box FMAG and I absolutely LOVED it. It was the most skilled low level thief I’ve ever played. It was such a joy to actually succeed with my skills more often than not. My immediate thought was to ask for a variant for B/X D&D. And what do you know I stumbled upon your Knave here for LL. Just wanted to check if you think this variant would work well for BX. Thanks Doug.
That’s awesome Chuck! I’m glad it worked well for you. This would work OK for B/X, I think the main problem is that classes in B/X don’t go up to level 20 like they do in LL, meaning the skill advancement gets spread out over more levels and might be a bit slower than you like for B/X.
Good point. Since B/X only goes to level 14 what about using the White Box Thief variant instead?
That would work, I’d just ignore the single save column and use d4 for hit dice.
Would the backstab mulitplier jump up to x4 at level 12 or is best to leave it at x3?
Sorry about that made a mistake. I meant to say should I allow a 5x backstab muliplier at level 12 or do you think its best to leave it 4x at level 8?
Extrapolating to the 5x at level 12 is fine, if you want the chart to go that high.
Thanks Doug, last thing: How do you make the charts? I’m trying to make my own version for BX. I assume your using Adobe with Times Roman font?
Am I’m talking about the actual cell blocks if that’s the right term; the areas where level, experience, HD, saving throw, etc… is located.
I think you mean the tables? I use libreoffice which has an export to PDF, but google docs also has table support and will let you download as PDF.
Ahhh, another question. What level should I stop allowing the choosing of an additional skill? Your Knave stops at level 13. White Box versions stops at 10.
I would just stop at 10 if you’re basing it on that version.
